Follow the Creation of Post 468's New Mural
How it Started:
On August 3rd of this year, Post 468 received an email from an RIT student named Rachel Adkins. She wote:

Hello!
My name is Rachel Adkins. I’m a student at Rochester Institute of Technology in my senior year, as well as a member of the New York National Guard. I graduated from Ft. Huachuca last year as a 35G and am now a Specialist in the 10th Mtn. MCPOD. I have been painting ever since I was little and have completed two full murals in the last few years, one in Mt.Airy, NC and another in Crystal Beach, TX. I live in Greece, NY and was passing by the American Legion building the other day. I was wondering if you would be interested in a mural for the front or side of the building? As a fellow military member, my way of showing my appreciation is through art, as all of my money currently goes to my college tuition. I would be honored to offer a mural of whatever you would like to honor our veterans, only costing the amount of paint supplies. I already have my own brushes and tools and everything else I need to complete the project. If not, I would be happy to create and donate a painting to the American Legion in honor of our veterans. I don’t have classes on Friday and would be happy to designate an entire weekend to painting a mural on the building if given the opportunity to do so.

As it so happens, a few members of our leadership team had been discussing looking into getting a mural put up on our building.  After a conversation with Rachel, we asked her to present her proposal to the Legion. It was met with a great deal of enthusiasm. Money was raised and everything was ready. The only question was if we needed a permit from the town of Greece. The question was submitted to the Town Supervisor during a meeting for another project. He assigned one of his staff to check it out and on Friday September 25th we got the go-ahead.

That very night Rachel was out at the Legion Post with a projector putting up the layout on the wall. We will document the odyssey from a blank wall to the final mural on this page.

The plants along the bottom were removed to make it easier to finish the lower section.
As you can see, this is becoming a beautiful piece of art.
Tomorrow: filling in the bottom and starting on the details on the top.
